Mustangs earn state's top-ranking in week 2
March 30, 2023
BLOOMFIELD HILLS – Just a season ago, Bloomfield Hills Marian fell Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central in the 2022 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 2 state championship game at Michigan State University.
The loss would break Marian's streak after three consecutive D2 championships (no championship was held in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic).
This year, under the direction of second year head coach Reid Friedrichs, the Mustangs were listed as the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association's (MIHSSCA) #2-ranked team behind the same Rangers that topped them in the 2022 finale.
FHC suffered a tight 1-0 season opening loss to Caledonia followed by a 3-1 victory over Grandville on March 28.
The Mustangs, however, have started the season with a bang. Marian earned a 3-0 victory over Walled Lake Central followed by a defensive battle against Notre Dame Prep leading to a 1-0 win. Marian opened the Catholic League Central Division portion of their schedule by dominating possession in an impressive 2-0 win over Lutheran North.
For their effort, Marian was awarded the top-ranking for Week 2 of the season by MHSSCA.
While some key injuries and departures have left Friedrichs and the team moving some pieces around, the varsity kickers will return solid production and leadership behind Ella Doerr, Coroline Flynn, Adrianna Kattoo and Lucy Kinna.
Additionally, a new crop of freshmen have already stepped forward to contribute including Giulianna Agrusso, younger sister of Isa Agrusso '22 (Michigan State), Clair Dauer, Brooke Salkowski and Bella Sheena.
Marian travels to Detroit Country Day (#3-Division 3) on March 30. Game time in the fieldhouse is 5:00 p.m.
