WHITE LAKE – Both Marian and Milford were undefeated through the regular season standings of the Southeastern Michigan Ski League (SEMSL) Alpine Valley Division.
As part of a week 3 reschedule due to course conditions, Marian and Milford completed the giant slalom portion of their dual meet just yesterday.
While Marian won the slalom event on January 24, 17-21, Milford took the giant slalom (GS) race, 16-20, resulting in an overall tie between the two teams (27-27).
With both teams undefeated and tied in a head-to-head matchup, the SEMSL Alpine Valley Divisional Championship was a winner-take-all event for both schools.
In the slalom event, Molly Lynch of Lakeland was the overall winner (44.74), but Emma Borgula finished runner-up with a two-run total time of 46.30.
Teammate Susie Klein was fourth with a combined time of 50.16. Stella Lowman (6th and Paige Rawlins (7th) also finished in the top ten and earned all-division honors.
Under these finishes, Marian dominated the field with 19 points while Milford finished second with 50 points
Milford won the team GS events with 24 points, but Marian finished second (26 points) and created the separation it needed for the overall win.
Borgula won both GS runs and finished as the Divisional GS champion with a combined run time of 39.02.
Susie Klein finished sixth (41.34) and Paige Rawlins (41.95) was eighth overall. Rounding out Marians scoring was Stella Lowman, who finished just outside the top ten with a time of 42.13.
Overall, Marian earned the team title by a comfortable margin with 45 points while Milford finished with 74.
Combining the championship points with the dual meet standings, Marian also came out on top earning 16 points to Milford 14.5.
Lakeland High School was third in the division, St. Mary's fourth and Walled Lake Northern was fifth. Hartland, Novi, Walled Lake Central and West Bloomfield earned places six through nine, respectively.
"Our four scorers were all in the top seven in (slalom) and we put three in the top 10 in GS, plus an 11th for our final scorer," remarked a relieved Mark Weymouth, Marian's head coach. "Emma (Borgula) added another Division title to her two from last year. Susie, Stella and Paige all had their highest finishes to date. We want to build on this for Regional Champs next Tuesday."
Alpine Valley will again be the host hill for the MHSAA Regional on February 13. The top three teams will advance to the Division 2 Finals at Boyne Mountain, where Marian is the host institution.
